RIP Carbondale
The city of Carbondale is doomed. From its government and public works to its people and businesses, Carbondale as a city will become nothing more than a series of box stores, shopping malls and chain restaurants clustered within an annexed area outside the residential districts. The once vibrate and motley downtown now is quiet. There is an emptiness about. The streets look bland and uninviting. Diversity is gone.
This is not for lack of trying by some entrepreneurial people. This is for lack of support from the local government and YUPPie crowd. As I dis on the yuppies, I remember that they are the ones responsible for creating and supporting “the strip” in the first place. They are the ones who shopped at the stores. They are the ones that did not leave after college and continued to open new businesses. They are also the one who can not let go of the past.
Carbondale will not and cannot remain the same. It is not the city of the ‘60s generation. It is not the city of my generation. It is a new millennium and new city. It is time for the YUPPies to let go and enjoy their retirement. While I see little hope, at least it does not have to be an agonizing death.

It would help to lose Brad Cole I think.
I don't know too much of him, but taxing bottled water a quarter a bottle and speaking of taking over the power companies utility poles don't seem like what I'd want in a mayor.
Perhaps they should look to Bob Butler, he's done a decent job with Marion.
By the way, Megan (scrambledmegzandtoast@hardestlevel) gave me a link to your site saying that you seem to be from Carbondale. So I thought I'd leave a message. I live in the area as well.
@MagisterTom - Brad is ... interesting. He does things that are in the best interests of Carbondale. At least that is his motivation. He is not morally bankrupt, or a lap puppy like most members of the city council.
@MagisterTom - I currently live in C'dale, went to SIU, grew in Cobden.
